Our latest dessert obsession: fried Nutella ice cream

Stylist.co.uk January 2016

Our Nutella fixation is already at unhealthy levels.

Given that a jar of the chocolate hazelnut spread is sold globally every 2.5 seconds, it would seem that we’re not alone.

But, as if it were needed, there is now a new way for us to ingest our quota of one of the best toast toppings ever.

A café in Sydney has come up with what must surely be the largest deep fried Nutella ice cream ever sold.

The café in question, Piccolo Me, are calling the concoction the Fried Maltella and it contains a grapefruit-sized serving of fried Nutella ice cream, dipped in salted caramel sauce and topped with crushed Maltesers.

Part of the pleasure of the dessert is the fusion of warm and cold elements that is the key to some of our existing favourites: warm chocolate brownie with cold vanilla ice cream anyone?

Sticking a firm two fingers up to the clean-eating movement, this concoction contains almost every unhealthy food group imaginable, but we can't deny that it sounds delicious.

Unfortunately, the Fried Maltella is only available for one week from Monday 25 January at the Piccolo Me café - so you'd have to trek all the way to Sydney to sample it - and they are keeping the recipe a firm secret.

The sweet treat takes two days to prepare and in the testing stage, it took six people to finish one.

We think it looks a bit like a giant scotch egg from the outside but that's not to say we wouldn't be happy to take one on - all in the name of culinary experimentation...
